iPad Pro M4 vs Surface Pro 11: which tablet actually replaces a laptop?

Apple shipped the iPad Pro M4 in May 2024 ($1,299 for 13" 256 GB Wi-Fi). Microsoft shipped the Surface Pro 11 in June 2024 ($999 for Snapdragon X Plus 256 GB). In April 2026 both remain the reference premium 2-in-1 devices. They're similarly priced once you add keyboard and stylus, but they solve fundamentally different problems: iPad Pro is a tablet that happens to type well; Surface Pro is a laptop that happens to detach.

Display: iPad Pro's tandem OLED is the best tablet display shipped

The iPad Pro M4's 13" Ultra Retina XDR uses two OLED panels stacked (tandem OLED) to achieve 1,000 nits sustained SDR and 1,600 nits HDR peak. Color accuracy is Delta E < 1.5 across sRGB and P3 gamuts. It is the reference for mobile OLED in any tablet, period.

Surface Pro 11's OLED variant (you have to spec up — the base ships LCD) is a single-panel OLED at 2880×1920 (higher pixel density than iPad) and hits 600 nits SDR / 900 nits HDR. Very good, not quite at iPad level. The LCD base variant is a solid 400-nit IPS.

For color-critical work (photo grading, video review, illustration), iPad Pro is the clear win. For office and browsing, Surface is fine.

Stylus and illustration

Apple Pencil Pro ($129) has:

• 3 ms latency (measured on iPadOS 18)
• Squeeze, barrel roll, and haptic feedback (new in Pro model)
• Find My integration (locate a lost pen in bag)
• Magnetic wireless charging on iPad side

Surface Slim Pen 2 ($129) has:

• ~9 ms latency on Windows 11 (tested with official Microsoft drivers)
• Haptic feedback in supported apps
• 4,096 pressure levels (same as Pencil Pro)

For professional illustration in Procreate, Clip Studio Paint, or Affinity Designer, the 6 ms latency difference is felt. Concept artists, comic illustrators, and designers prefer the iPad Pro. For note-taking and markup (the 95% use case), Surface Slim Pen 2 is indistinguishable.

OS: the fundamental difference

iPadOS 18 is a tablet OS. It has Stage Manager for multitasking (3 apps on screen, split into groupings), a Files app, a proper keyboard shortcut system, and native pro apps (Final Cut, Logic, Affinity suite, Lightroom CC, DaVinci Resolve for iPad). But it is not macOS — it's sandboxed, limits background tasks, and some pro workflows still don't work (professional audio plugin hosts, full Final Cut Pro X plugin support, arbitrary code execution).

Windows 11 on Surface Pro 11 is the full desktop OS. You can run the full Office 365 suite with VBA macros, Visual Studio with Python/C++/Rust toolchains, third-party Windows software 20 years old, any browser, any remote desktop client, anything. The catch: ARM compatibility. About 70% of the top 200 Windows apps run natively on ARM (Chrome, Slack, Office, Photoshop); the rest run under Prism emulation with ~15–25% perf penalty. Anti-cheat gaming (Valorant, Fortnite) is the main broken category.

Productivity reality — who actually uses these for work

• Writers, researchers, journalists: iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard is a genuine 8-hour-day work tool. Ulysses, Scrivener, Obsidian, and Google Docs all have excellent iPad apps.
• Illustrators, comic artists, concept designers: iPad Pro with Procreate Dreams, Clip Studio Paint, and Affinity Designer 2 for iPad is the dominant platform. Surface Pro is behind.
• Office workers who live in Excel with macros: Surface Pro. iPad Excel doesn't support VBA.
• Students with field engineering, CAD, or lab software: Surface Pro — full AutoCAD, MATLAB, LabVIEW run on Windows ARM or under emulation.
• Field technicians and IT admins: Surface Pro — you need a real Windows file manager, SSH, remote desktop, and enterprise Active Directory support.

Battery life and performance reality

iPad Pro M4 runs 10 hours of real mixed use (browsing, video, writing). Under Procreate at 120 Hz with ProMotion, battery drops to ~8 hours. Under Final Cut video editing, ~6.5 hours.

Surface Pro 11 Snapdragon X Plus runs 14 hours of local video loop. Under mixed use (Chrome + Teams + Word), ~11 hours. Under Photoshop editing, ~7 hours. Windows 11 on ARM is genuinely efficient — the battery lead over iPad is real and consistent.

Keyboard accessories: the hidden price

iPad Pro 13" Magic Keyboard: $299. Backlit keys, trackpad, function row, USB-C passthrough for charging. Excellent typing feel. Heavy (593 g alone).

Surface Pro 11 Type Cover: $179 (standard) or $279 with Slim Pen 2 included. Backlit, decent keys but less travel than Magic Keyboard. Lighter (270 g).

Surface Pro 11 Flex Keyboard: $449 with Slim Pen 2. Wireless (Bluetooth), haptic trackpad, uses a copilot key. Overkill for most.

Price comparison for real working kits

Surface Pro 11 consistently undercuts iPad Pro by $400–$600 on comparable spec. The iPad commands a premium for the display, unified memory efficiency, Pencil latency, and illustrator ecosystem. If those aren't your priorities, the Surface is 30% cheaper for equivalent capability.

Decision criteria

• Buy the iPad Pro M4 if: you illustrate, take handwritten notes, edit photos/videos on battery, or need the best mobile display for color-critical work.
• Buy the Surface Pro 11 if: you run any Windows-only software, need full Office with macros, care about removable SSD, or want the longest battery on a premium tablet.
• Buy neither — get a MacBook Air M4 if typing is your #1 activity. The Air is cheaper than either fully kitted tablet and has a real keyboard.
• Buy neither — get an iPad Air M2 ($599) if you don't need ProMotion / mini-LED. The Air has the same apps and supports the Pencil Pro.
