Our verdict

Buy the iPhone 16 Pro refurb at $849 unless you specifically shoot 4K120 ProRes Log or lean on Apple Intelligence 2.0's 3B-parameter on-device model. The 17 Pro's improvements are real (brighter display, better telephoto sensor, 2 nm A19 Pro) but marginal for 80% of buyers. iOS updates are locked to at least 2031 on both โ€” you lose nothing on software support.

iPhone 16 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: is the new model worth $150 more?

Apple released the iPhone 17 Pro in September 2025 and the iPhone 16 Pro in September 2024. As of April 2026, you can buy a brand-new iPhone 17 Pro for $1,099 (256 GB) at Apple or a refurbished / carrier-trade-in iPhone 16 Pro for $849 in the same storage. That $250 delta is the real question: what specifically do you get for 29% more money?

The short answer: a brighter display (2,500 nits vs 2,000 peak), a redesigned telephoto camera with a bigger sensor, the A19 Pro on TSMC's 2 nm (N2) node with roughly 6% better single-core and 7% better multi-core, and full access to Apple Intelligence 2.0's 3B-parameter on-device model. Everything else โ€” frame material, button layout, iOS version, USB-C speed โ€” is identical. For 80% of buyers the 16 Pro is the smarter spend.

Chip generation: A18 Pro vs A19 Pro

The 6โ€“7% single-thread gain is not something you will feel in Safari, Instagram, or Spotify. You will feel it in: local Stable Diffusion generation (18s โ†’ 13s), 4K60 video export (45s โ†’ 38s on a 2-min clip), and long-session gaming at 120 fps. For daily messaging and browsing, these chips are indistinguishable.

Camera: the real upgrade is the telephoto, not the main sensor

Both phones ship with a 48 MP main camera (24mm equivalent, f/1.78, 1/1.28" sensor). The iPhone 17 Pro's main sensor gets one stop more dynamic range in Apple's lab tests but real-world shooting rarely shows the difference. Where the 17 Pro clearly wins: the telephoto. It uses a 48 MP tetraprism sensor vs the 16 Pro's 12 MP, which means 5ร— optical zoom shots are visibly sharper and you can crop to 10ร— with real detail. Night Sight on the telephoto improves by roughly 1.3 stops.

Video is another small step: the 16 Pro does ProRes 4K60 internal; the 17 Pro does ProRes 4K120 and adds Log recording with an ACES workflow. If you don't know what ACES is, you don't need 4K120 ProRes โ€” you need iCloud storage because a 1-minute 4K120 Log clip is 1.2 GB.

Display: +500 nits is real, but mostly outdoors

iPhone 16 Pro: 2,000 nits peak outdoor / 1,600 nits HDR. iPhone 17 Pro: 2,500 nits peak outdoor / 1,800 nits HDR. Both are 6.3" LTPO OLED at 120 Hz with identical 1โ€“120 Hz variable refresh. Peak brightness only matters in direct sun โ€” and honestly, even at 2,000 nits the 16 Pro is perfectly readable at noon. The 17 Pro is noticeably easier on a ski slope or a construction site; indoors you'll never tell them apart.

Battery and charging

iPhone 16 Pro has a 3,582 mAh battery rated 27 hours video playback. iPhone 17 Pro has a 3,650 mAh battery rated 29 hours โ€” 8% more capacity, 7% more runtime. Both support 30 W USB-C PD wired (0โ€“50% in ~30 minutes), 25 W MagSafe wireless, and 15 W Qi2 wireless. Battery swap at year 3 is the same $99 service at Apple or $79 at authorized third parties on both models.

Apple Intelligence: where the 17 Pro pulls ahead

Both phones run Apple Intelligence. But Apple Intelligence 2.0 (iOS 19.2+, shipped March 2026) includes on-device camera-scene descriptions, real-time call translation with voice cloning, and Genmoji with context โ€” all of which require the A19 Pro's new Neural Engine microcode. The 16 Pro can still use cloud-backed Apple Intelligence (Private Cloud Compute), but latency is 2โ€“5ร— slower on cellular and drains battery more. If you use AI features daily and you're on cellular often, the 17 Pro is tangibly better.

Ecosystem and accessories compatibility

Both phones work with the same cases (USB-C port and camera layout are effectively identical), same AirPods, same Apple Watch, same CarPlay stack, same MagSafe wallets. If you're coming from a 15 Pro or older, the 16 Pro is a noticeable upgrade in Action Button, titanium frame, and camera stack. If you're coming from a 14 Pro or older, either works โ€” you'll feel the iOS 19 + Apple Intelligence improvements either way.

Storage tiers โ€” watch the base config

iPhone 16 Pro base: 128 GB at $999 (new) / $849 (refurb). 256 GB: $1,099 new / $929 refurb. 512 GB: $1,299 new. 1 TB: $1,499 new. iPhone 17 Pro base: 256 GB at $1,099 new โ€” Apple dropped the 128 GB tier for the 17 Pro. That means the real baseline comparison is 16 Pro 256 GB at $929 refurb vs 17 Pro 256 GB at $1,099 new: a $170 delta for a brand-new phone with an extra year of warranty and full Apple Intelligence 2.0.

Resale value โ€” 3-year TCO

Based on Swappa and Back Market trends for the prior generation (15 Pro โ†’ 17 Pro era), expect:

  • iPhone 16 Pro 256 GB purchased at $929 refurb today will resell at $440โ€“$500 in spring 2029. Net 3-year cost: ~$450.
  • iPhone 17 Pro 256 GB purchased at $1,099 new today will resell at $550โ€“$620 in spring 2029. Net 3-year cost: ~$510.

The 17 Pro is about $60 more expensive over 3 years net of resale. That's $1.70 per month. If you lean on the camera or AI features, it's easily worth it. If you don't, save the $170 and buy AppleCare+ instead.

Heads up: Resale estimates are based on Swappa and Back Market's historical depreciation curves for iPhone 14 Pro โ†’ iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro โ†’ iPhone 16 Pro over 2023โ€“2026. Actual resale depends on condition, unlock status, battery health, and storage tier.

The decision matrix

  • Buy the iPhone 16 Pro refurb at $849 if you don't shoot 5โ€“10ร— telephoto daily, don't need 4K120 ProRes, and mostly use your phone indoors.
  • Buy the iPhone 17 Pro new at $1,099 if you're a content creator, a pro photographer using the telephoto at zoom, or someone who leans hard on Apple Intelligence.
  • Skip both and wait for iPhone 18 Pro (Sept 2026) only if your current phone is under 2 years old with >85% battery. Annual upgrades are rarely worth it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone 16 Pro still getting iOS updates?

Yes. Apple historically supports the Pro line for 6โ€“7 years of major iOS updates. The iPhone 16 Pro will receive updates through at least iOS 25 in 2031.

Does the 17 Pro camera upgrade matter for social media photos?

Not really. Instagram and TikTok compress uploads aggressively. The 16 Pro's main camera at f/1.78 is identical output for 95% of social content.

Can I buy refurbished directly from Apple?

Yes. Apple Refurbished sells iPhone 16 Pro 256 GB at $929 with a 1-year warranty and full AppleCare+ eligibility. This is the same as new minus factory packaging.

Will my MagSafe cases from 15 Pro fit?

No. The 16 Pro and 17 Pro share a camera layout, but the 15 Pro has a slightly different camera island. Check your specific case model.

Is 128 GB enough on the 16 Pro?

For most users yes, if you stream music/video and lean on iCloud. If you shoot ProRaw photos (25โ€“75 MB each) or 4K video (400 MB/min), step up to 256 GB.
