Why modern TVs are bigger

With 4K, pixels are invisible past 1.8ร— diagonal. You can sit twice as close as you could with 1080p and see no blocking. This means a 75" TV is the new 55".

Room factor

Measure your couch to wall distance. Most American living rooms are 9โ€“12 ft โ€” that puts 65โ€“77" in the sweet spot. Go bigger if you have space, smaller only if the room is truly small.

2.8K worth it?

Not in 2026 โ€” native 8K content is nearly nonexistent. Budget-allocate the money to OLED or a better speaker setup instead.

3.What about projectors?

Projectors scale to 100"+ trivially. At that size, OLED starts costing $10K+. For dedicated movie rooms, projectors win on $-per-inch.

4.How close can I sit safely?

No risk from LED/OLED light or blue light at normal viewing distance. Eye strain is about posture and blink rate, not TV size.

5.Should I wall mount?

If the ideal viewing height puts the TV above a stand (center of screen at eye level seated = ~42" from floor), wall mount. Otherwise stand works.

"What size TV should I buy?" is answered by three actual standards. SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) recommends a 30ยฐ viewing angle. THX recommends 36-40ยฐ for immersive cinema. Both translate to formulas based on resolution and viewing distance. The result โ€” you're probably buying a TV too small.

The formula

SMPTE (30ยฐ angle): TV diagonal (inches) = viewing distance (inches) ร— 0.625. THX (40ยฐ angle): TV diagonal = viewing distance ร— 0.84. Example: if you sit 9 feet (108 inches) from the TV, SMPTE says 67" (round to 65"), THX says 91" (round to 85" or 98"). For 4K content, the optimum is slightly larger than SMPTE because you can sit closer without seeing pixels. Most people's living rooms could comfortably handle one TV size bigger than what they currently own.

Why "too big" is rarely actually too big

Common complaints about large TVs ("I have to turn my head") usually come from people seated closer than recommended minimum viewing distance. For a 65" 4K TV, minimum viewing distance is ~6.5 feet. For a 75", ~7.5 feet. For 85", ~8.5 feet. Under minimum: visible pixels and eye strain. Over ideal: image feels small. The window where a 75" is "too big" is narrow โ€” and most rooms are further than that.

Content type matters

Movies and sports: bigger is better (cinema-style fills your field of view). Gaming: depends on genre โ€” FPS/competitive benefits from smaller-but-closer (you can see the whole screen in one glance), story/open-world benefits from bigger. Casual TV viewing, news, daytime: bigger = better on all dimensions. Daily content mix skews most buyers toward "go 10" bigger than you think."

4K vs 8K โ€” does resolution change sizing?

4K (3840ร—2160): pixel invisible at ~1.5x the screen height. At 9 ft / 108", a 65" TV has pixel density fine for 4K. 8K (7680ร—4320): pixels invisible at ~0.75x screen height โ€” meaning you'd need to sit very close or have a very large screen for 8K to be perceptually better than 4K. In a typical living room, 8K is marketing. The industry has largely given up on 8K as of 2026; focus is on better HDR, better motion handling, and processing.

Aspect ratio and letterboxing

All modern TVs are 16:9. Most movies are 2.35:1 (anamorphic) โ€” they'll have black bars top/bottom, effectively reducing usable screen area by 25%. Compensate by buying one size bigger if you watch a lot of movies. Ultrawide monitors or 21:9 TVs exist but have essentially no content โ€” don't buy them for TV use.

Frequently asked questions

Is 55" enough for a 10-ft distance?

No, it's way undersized. At 10 ft, SMPTE says 75", THX says 100". 55" at 10 ft means the image occupies less of your field of view than a magazine at arm's length. You'll squint at subtitles and feel no immersion.

Can a TV be too bright?

In HDR highlights, 2,000-4,000 nits is what studios grade for. In SDR, 250-400 nits is comfortable; over 600 nits gets uncomfortable. Most TVs auto-dim to ambient light (Ambient Mode / ECO settings) โ€” leave these on.

4K or 8K in 2026?

4K. Native 8K content is still essentially non-existent outside of demo reels. 8K upscaling from 4K exists but the benefit is marginal. Save the money for OLED or better HDR.

How far is too close?

For 4K: under 1x screen height becomes uncomfortable (you can see pixels; eyes can't take in whole screen). 1.5-2.5x screen height is the sweet spot. Distance < 1x height is headache territory.

Does screen curve help immersion?

Only on ultrawide monitors 34"+ at desk distance. On a TV you watch from 6-12 ft, curve is cosmetic and mildly reduces glare from side lamps. Not worth paying extra.

Do I need an 85-inch TV or a projector for a 15-foot room?

At 15 ft from the couch, SMPTE says 112 inches and THX says 151 inches โ€” no TV reaches that. Does Samsung The Frame make sense for a living room?

The Frame ($1,399 for 65&quot;, $2,499 for 85&quot;) has genuinely matte anti-glare panel (same treatment as the S95D QD-OLED), art-mode with real art licensing, and a flush wall mount included. Tradeoffs: peak HDR brightness is only 350-400 nits (vs 1,500+ on the QN90D), 60 Hz only (no VRR, no 120 Hz gaming). For a living room where the TV is off 80% of the time and you care more about aesthetics than movie nights, The Frame is worth it. For a home theater or serious gamer, The Frame gives up too much performance; buy the S90D OLED or QN90D instead.

How do I verify the exact viewing distance for my specific layout?

Take a tape measure from the front edge of where your head will actually sit to the wall the TV will mount on. Subtract 3 inches for the TV&apos;s wall mount depth. Multiply that number (in inches) by 0.625 for SMPTE size, or 0.84 for THX size. Example: 108 inches - 3 = 105 inches ร— 0.625 = 65.6&quot; โ†’ buy 65&quot; or 77&quot;.
