Sub-249g rule

DJI Mini 4 Pro weighs under 249g, which exempts it from FAA registration for recreational use. Huge win for casual flyers.

When to go Mavic

Mavic 4 Pro is the best-in-class for paid work โ€” 4/3 sensor, variable aperture, 120 Mbps video. Overkill for hobbyists.

Autel as DJI alternative

Autel avoids DJI geofencing issues and US political uncertainty. Slightly behind on obstacle avoidance but catching up fast.

Frequently asked questions

1.How is the Drone vs models score calculated?

Each option has a 1โ€“10 score on multiple criteria (drawn from public reviews, benchmarks, and spec sheets). Your importance weights multiply each criterion's score, then we sum and normalize.

2.Why doesn't the tool give one definitive answer?

The best option depends on your priorities. Weighting lets you see how the answer changes when you care more about, e.g., camera than battery.

3.Is this tool sponsored?

No. No affiliate codes, no sponsor bias, no paid rankings. Scores are based on verifiable public data.

4.How often are scores updated?

Scores reflect current flagship models. We refresh 2โ€“3 times per year as new generations launch.

5.Can I compare specific models?

This tool compares ecosystems. For specific model matchups, use the related comparison tools.

Consumer drones in 2026: DJI still dominates

DJI makes ~75% of consumer drones globally. Autel is the credible alternative for US buyers concerned about regulatory risk. Skydio (enterprise only since 2023). Other brands are toys, not tools. This guide covers Mini, Air, and Mavic lines from DJI, plus Autel's EVO series.

Weight classes and regulations

Under 250 g (Mini 3, Mini 4 Pro): exempt from FAA registration for recreational use in the US. Most other countries also relax rules at this weight. 250 g - 25 kg: must register with FAA ($5, one-time), pass the TRUST test (free online), follow Part 107 rules for commercial use. Night flying requires lighting and additional certification. Over-populated areas need specific waivers.

Camera quality jumps

1/1.3" sensor (Mini 3, Mini 4 Pro): good daylight photos, struggles in low light. 1" sensor (Air 3S primary, EVO Lite+): ~2x light gathering, usable at ISO 1600. 4/3 sensor (Mavic 3 Pro main camera): pro-grade, 12-stop dynamic range. For content creators, the gap from 1/1.3" to 1" is more noticeable than from 1" to 4/3. Most buyers should look at 1-inch sensor minimum.

Obstacle avoidance and autonomous flight

Mini 4 Pro: omnidirectional avoidance (first in the Mini line) โ€” this alone is a huge reason to upgrade from Mini 3. Air 3S: omnidirectional + lidar for night obstacle sensing. Mavic 3 Pro: omnidirectional with APAS 5. Autel EVO II Pro V3: omnidirectional, less polished than DJI's.

FPV (first-person-view)

DJI Avata 2 + Goggles 3 is the turn-key FPV setup โ€” $999 combo, cinematic flying at moderate speed, no building required. For racing/freestyle: buy a kit from BetaFPV or Iflight, learn to build and fly on a simulator (Liftoff, DRL) for 20-30 hours before real flight. FPV has a much steeper skill curve than standard drones.

Range anxiety

Advertised ranges (Mini 4 Pro: 20km, Mavic 3 Pro: 28km) are best-case scenarios with no interference. Real-world in urban/suburban: 2-8 km before signal degrades. Always keep drone in VLOS (visual line of sight) โ€” this is actually a legal requirement in most jurisdictions.

Heads up: Drone regulations change frequently. Check your country's current rules before flying. Never fly near airports, emergency situations, or over crowds without permits.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a license to fly a drone?

In the US: under 250g and purely recreational, no license. Over 250g: register with FAA + pass TRUST test (both free/minimal cost). Commercial use of any drone: Part 107 license ($175 exam).

Is DJI safe to use given US-China tensions?

There's ongoing legislation to restrict DJI. As of April 2026, DJI is legal to buy and fly recreationally in the US. For federal/military contracts, domestic alternatives are required. Consumer risk is low; concerned buyers go Autel.

Mini vs Air vs Mavic?

Mini: under-250g, travel-friendly, smaller sensor. Air: larger sensor, same form factor as Mavic 2 was, sweet spot. Mavic Pro: biggest sensor, longest flight, pro features โ€” heavier and requires registration everywhere.

How long do batteries last?

Flight batteries: ~200 cycles (100 hours of flight) before noticeable capacity loss. Replace every 2-3 years of moderate use.

Can I fly in wind?

Most consumer drones handle 10-15 mph (wind class 4-5). Mini series is more affected than larger drones. Beyond 20 mph, even Mavic 3 Pro struggles to hold position.
